Click to view presentation Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) is a new species in Aquaculture. One of the problems with the halibut, is the long production period under natural conditions, where it takes 4-7 years to grow the fish from fry to harvest.
By using UNI-aqua recirculation technology, the production time can be reduced to only 2-3 years, with a serious overall reduction in production costs and risk.

Click to view presentation Cod (Gadus morhua) is another new species in aquaculture. It is a species that could have the potential to grow into a production volume equivalent to that of salmon. Compared to some other cold water species as for example Turbot, the fry is relative easy to produce, and availability of juveniles will hardly be a limitation. On the other hand to reduce production time, the fish need to be 70 gram or more before they at a uniform size should be transfered to cages. The most economical way to grow the fish from juvenile size to 70-100 gram, is in land based recirculation systems, where growth rate can be increased, and production costs reduced, further the disease problems minimised. In UNI-Aqua we have the experience to design safe recirculation systems for production of cod.

Click to view presentation Atlantic salmon, (Salmo salar) is “The Grand Old Man” within aquaculture. We expect that even more smolt will be produced in recirculation systems in the years to come. First of all because it is the simplest way to reduce overall production costs on salmon. A recirculation unit is often cheaper in investments than flow through.
This is because, in recirculation, much more fish can be produced per volume unit, and less tank volume and building facilities are required. Moreover, a salmon smolt unit can be build with less restrictions to water source and climate conditions - the smolt facility can be located where the smolt is needed, and transport cost be reduced or eliminated. The advantages of using UNI-Aqua's recirculation technology, includes fast growth, and efficient disease control. And not to forget - improved logistical planning.

Click to view presentation Trout, (e.g., Oncorhynchus spp.) is one of the most widespread species within aquaculture. A flow through system is often the most economical solution for trout production. But when it comes to fry production, recirculation is often the best solution. With a relatively small investment, production logistics can be improved, and a much better utilization of the water source obtained.

Click to view presentation Turbot, (Scophthalmus maximus), Sole (Solea Solea) and Japanese Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) are flat fish species of increasing importance in aquaculture. Due to the tank area required, and the reduction of space by use of/using re-circulation technology. There is in reality no alternatives to the use of re-circulation technology to stay competitive.

Click to view presentation Blue Fin Tuna, (Thunnus thynnus) has been on-grown in cage culture for many years using wild caught juveniles. However with decreasing wild stocks interest in using captive brood stocks and hatcheries for producing juveniles to on-grow is becoming particularly attractive. UNI-Aqua is working with the Tuna farming industry to develop the future in Tuna aquaculture.
See article from Fish Farming International October 2006.

Click to view presentation Merluza Austral, (Merluccius australis) is a new species within aquaculture. It is expected to be one of the new big species in aquaculture. The on-growing will take place in cages. But hatching and production of juveniles, up to 20-100g, will be produced in land based re-circulated farms.

We will soon post a presentation on Merluza.

Click to view presentation Abalone (Haliotis spp.). Abalone is an animal produced in Aquaculture which we can predict in the future will be produced almost exclusively in recirculation systems. Simply because, investments and operation costs will be much lower with recirculation technology. The production is much safer, and further the parasites often causing problems in Abalone farming can be eliminated in a recirculation system. A recirculation system for fish can not be used for Abalone, as this animal has different requirements. It has been necessary to develop a new recirculation concept for this animal.

Click to view presentation European Eel (Anguilla anguilla)was one of the first fishes to be grown in intensive aquaculture in Europe. It is a tough animal, which can stand a harsh environment. The majority of eels are produced in old facilities, with very poor water quality. There are considerable potentials in implementing new technology in the eel farming industry, and reducing production costs. Energy and feed costs can be reduced. And the fish quality can be improved.
